Accessories for Bad Weather: Gear for Rain, Cold & Low Light

How do you equip a kids’ bike when blue skies are nowhere to be seen? Mudguards come in handy on wet paths, lights help in low visibility, and functional clothing makes changeable weather easier to handle. Gloves add comfort at the handlebars and help protect little palms. We’ve picked out accessories that keep bike rides fun even when the weather isn’t playing along.

Wet Path, Dry Back

A wet path is no reason to change your plans. With mudguards on their bike, little rascals can focus on the important question: where to explore next. Water, mud and road grime are less likely to end up where you don’t want them.

RASCAL Mud Control mudguards are designed specifically for RASCAL Classic bikes. Each set includes a front and rear mudguard, and choosing the right version is easy – simply match it to your bike size. They’re useful not only in the rain, but also afterwards, when the sun is back out but the little riders are tempted to ride through every leftover puddle.

Keep Little Rascals Visible

Adventures usually last longer than planned. And if the sky clouds over or daylight starts to fade along the way, bike lights come into play.

The RASCAL x Bookman Light Set includes a front and rear light that can be easily attached to the handlebars, seatpost, or even a helmet. They help make your child more visible at dusk and in low-light conditions.

It’s worth distinguishing between two different things: being seen and seeing the way ahead. Small safety lights help other people see your little rider well.

Another option is the individual RASCAL x Bookman light. Its clip lets you attach it to a jacket or backpack, giving your child extra visibility.

Gloves Are More Than a Style Statement

Cycling gloves may earn your little rascal a few extra points for the racing look, but their most important job is much more practical.

Kids’ cycling gloves make holding the handlebars more comfortable and help protect palms from scrapes in the event of a fall. RASCAL gloves feature a padded palm, flexible material and ventilation. Kids who prefer a more understated look might go for RASCAL Ride&Play gloves.

When Your Little Rascal Warms Up Faster Than the Air

Dressing kids for a bike ride so they’re neither too cold nor too warm can be a small challenge in itself. They may feel chilly when they set off, but after a few minutes of pedalling they’re working hard and that extra layer can quickly become too much.

That’s where the RASCAL x Isadore functional T-shirt comes in. Made from a blend of merino wool and Coolmax Fresh functional fibre, it helps wick moisture away from the body and works well as a practical base layer for active riding. Depending on the temperature, simply add another layer on top and take it off again once your little rider warms up.

Tip: When the weather is on your side, pair the functional T-shirt with RASCAL x Isadore cycling shorts, designed for greater comfort in the saddle.

The Right Gear Helps. But You Can’t Talk the Weather Round.

Mudguards, lights and functional clothing can’t turn a wet path into dry tarmac. Brakes are also less effective in wet conditions than in the dry, which increases stopping distance. Always adjust your speed and route to the conditions.

Tip: Before setting off, give the bike a quick check. Check the brakes, tyres and drivetrain, and make sure everything is ready for a safe ride. For a quick checklist, see our guide How to Check Your Child’s Bike Before Every Ride: 4 Easy Steps.

A Little Bad Weather Doesn’t Have to Stop the Fun

Not every day comes with blue skies and the perfect temperature. But if you match your bike gear to the conditions outside, the first raindrops, a chilly breeze or fading daylight don’t have to spoil the joy of riding. You can’t rely on the weather. Good gear is another story.
